Dignity Health Saint Francis Memorial Hospital of San Francisco, California, which has been providing healthcare in the Bay Area for more than 100 years, announced that it is now offering hospital-based, same-day hip replacement surgery. According to PR Newswire, patients are able to go home within 13 hours of hip replacement surgery.
Nicholas Mast, M.D., medical director of the Saint Francis Orthopedic Institute, is basing the same-day hip replacement surgery on the increasingly popular, less-invasive anterior approach. Mast has adopted the anterior procedure because approaching the hip from the front of the patient can decrease the possibility of complications and calls for fewer restrictions following the surgery. Mast reports that patients receiving the anterior approach usually require a shorter hospital stay and thus reduce the cost of care. Many experience a faster recovery and less post-operative pain.
“Patients heal better in the outpatient environment. There’s less stress, less risk of certain complications, and patients can rest better in their own beds, ” said Mast. “I’m excited to be on the forefront of a procedure that when I was training, used to take patients five or six days in the hospital plus additional weeks at a rehab center before going home. Now we can discharge them in one day to recover more comfortably at home.”
